In this course, managers will gain an understanding of the various components of the university's compensation structures and processes for Support Staff and Management and Professional Staff (MaPS), ultimately enabling managers to confidently execute a staffing strategy to attract, retain, develop and motivate exemplary staff. 

Upon completion of the eLearning course, managers will:

  • Be introduced to the compensation philosophy and principles at the University of Calgary
  • Understand how compensation is one of six components of the total rewards package
  • Recognize how employee roles are organized (AUPE job families and phases and MaPS career bands and levels)
  • Know who to contact and where to locate compensation resources

In this course, managers will be introduced to the job profile, be shown how to create and update one. Managers will gain an understanding of the processes you need a job profile for and how they are used to classify a role.

Upon completion of the eLearning course, managers will be able to:

  • Locate a job profile and understand the requirements for all of the sections
  • Understand the role of managers, HR Services, and Compensation in evaluating a job profile, and
  • Locate the necessary resources to create or update a job profile.

In this course, managers will understand the different types of compensation Support Staff may receive and how and why pay decisions are made.

Upon completion of the eLearning course, managers will:

  • Understand what is involved with making informed salary decisions pertaining to the compensation for the position (or the incumbent)
  • Recognize and initiate special compensation requests for the person pertaining to:
    • Base starting salary
    • Annual salary administration process
    • Growth Increment, Acting Incumbency, and Group Leader Premium
    • The appeal process for a job review
  • Know who to contact and where to locate compensation support

This course provides you with the tools to effectively manage employees in a unionized workplace. Specifically, you will:

  • Acquire a general understanding of the University of Calgary’s labour relations framework
  • Understand the anatomy of a collective agreement
  • Understand the general rules of interpretation
  • Recognize management rights
  • Understand union recognition and representation rights
  • Effectively address issues in the workplace through problem-solving and the corrective action process

This workshop expands on the material learned in the prerequisite online courses. Managers will be guided through case studies to apply their knowledge and learn more about Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) activities and their specific responsibilities for managing the health and safety of their employees.

During this workshop you will:

  • Understand and describe the legal responsibilities of managers and university-specific responsibilities for Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)
  • Describe the elements of the university’s Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS)
  • Understand the concept of due diligence as applied to OHS
  • Understand what you need to do to implement the OHSMS and demonstrate due diligence
  • Understand the role of the Environment, Health and Safety Department and the resources and expertise available

Connect to Perform is the evolution of performance management at the university. This course enables employees and managers to improve the quality of their performance conversations, focusing on five topics.  

At the University of Calgary we have evolved our performance management framework to focus on development and growth, connect individual efforts to the success of the faculty/unit, and enable individuals to perform to the best of their abilities. Intended for all employees and managers, this course includes five 25-30 minute eLearning modules. Each module explores a different topic and includes examples of how you can practice what you have learned. We recommend completing the course in order, but you may also choose a specific module to complete at any time. By the end of this online course, you will be able to:

  • Begin or improve a practice of frequent one-on-one meetings
  • Set performance goals
  • Give and receive effective feedback
  • Participate in a career conversation
  • Create and follow-through on a development plan
