Collective Bargaining Updates

Collective Bargaining with the Graduate Students’ Association

November 30, 2023

After ten months of negotiations, the university and the Graduate Students’ Association have reached an impasse in bargaining.

During bargaining, the university agreed to make significant changes to the collective agreement that will benefit graduate assistants. The university also offered salary increases that are consistent with the agreements reached with University of Calgary faculty and support staff, as well as the Graduate Students’ Associations at the universities of Alberta and Lethbridge. Unfortunately, there were a number of items that the parties were unable to agree on.

There is an option for the university and the GSA to enter voluntary mediation to expediate the renewal of a collective agreement. This is a different process than formal mediation and can begin prior to the parties being in a position to access formal mediation. The university proposed voluntary mediation to the GSA nearly four weeks ago. The GSA has yet to respond.
